Foresthill Forum to Hear Report on Upgrades to Foresthill Road

July 31, 2012

At the next meeting of the Foresthill Forum, the municipal advisory committee for the Foresthill area, Placer County Department of Public Works (DPW) will present an update on two projects that will improve safety on Foresthill Road.

At its July 10, 2012 meeting, the Board of Supervisors approved the $1.5 million contract for the project, which is located on Foresthill Road, approximately 3.2 miles east of the intersection of Interstate 80 and the Auburn Ravine - Foresthill exit. The project, which began July 30, 2012, is expected to be completed in the fall.

DPW is working in conjunction with Caltrans and the Federal Highway Administration on the two federally-funded projects that were combined into one construction contract to maximize construction and management efficiencies. The projects will excavate a hill immediately east of the intersection of Foresthill Road and Old Auburn Foresthill Road, and construct a mechanically stabilized earthen retaining wall 1,000 feet to the east of the intersection. This will then allow realignment of the roadway that will smooth out the curve.

Smoothing out the curve will improve sight distance, and allow for reconstruction of this segment of Foresthill Road, which will lead to improved roadway safety. The curves within the project area have a high accident history. That, coupled with the substandard geometry and limited sight visibility, qualified the project for federal road safety improvement grant funding. The primary goal of the project is to increase public safety by improving the geometry within this segment of Foresthill Road. Long-term local traffic patterns will not be altered; however, temporary lane closures or detours may be required during construction.

The Foresthill Forum will meet on Mon., Aug. 6, 2012, at 7:00 p.m. at Foresthill Memorial Hall, Leroy E. Botts Memorial Park, 24601 Harrison Street, Foresthill.
