Supervisors Honor Department Of Public Works; Approve Multiple Projects Upgrading Infrastructure

The Placer County Department of Public Works was honored today by the Board of Supervisors, which approved a proclamation designating May 20-26, 2012, as National Public Works Week. The third week of May is annually recognized around the country and is meant to illuminate the importance of the Public Works infrastructure and services.

Placer County’s Department of Public Works (DPW) provides a wide range of public services throughout the county. DPW’s programs and services include:

  • Road Maintenance;
  • Fleet Services;
  • Transit Services;
  • Transportation Planning/Traffic Engineering;
  • Roadway and Bridge Design;
  • Tahoe Engineering;
  • Storm Water Quality Program; and
  • Floodplain Management.

The proclamation approved by the Board today noted that “the health, safety, welfare and quality of life of Placer County residents greatly depends on these services” provided by DPW.

Additional items on the Board’s agenda addressed other items for the Department. They include the approval of a construction management contract for the Cook-Riolo Bridge Replacement project. The contract, for $874,000, was awarded to Psomas, Inc., and will include construction management, inspection, materials testing and related services.

The Project will replace an existing one-lane bridge that is deteriorating and subject to flooding, with a new bridge that will have two, 12-foot lanes for traffic, two 4-foot shoulders and a dedicated 10-foot bicycle/pedestrian lane that will have a concrete barrier between vehicle traffic and pedestrians and bicyclists. The Board approved the construction contract for the replacement at its last meeting.

Additionally, the Board approved a resolution authorizing the DPW to enter into an agreement with the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) for the construction of improvements to the intersection of Alpine Meadows Road and State Route 89 in the Lake Tahoe area.

The agreement will allow Caltrans to reimburse the county for constructing intersection improvements while the county is completing design work for replacement of the existing, structurally deficient bridge across Alpine Meadows Road over the Truckee River. The project will build a new bridge and roadway approaches. The intersection improvements will include a new signal and improved lane movements from southbound State Route 89 onto eastbound Alpine Meadows Road.

The Board also approved a budget revision for the County’s Facilities Services Department that will allow restroom improvements to the Loomis Basin Community Park. This 33-acre park is along King Road in Loomis. The revision approved today will allow construction of permanent, flush restrooms on the north park, which currently has portable facilities. To facilitate the upgrade to facilities on the softball fields on the north side of the park, a sewer line will be constructed from Loomis Park North across King Road to the existing septic system at Loomis Park South.

The entire project is valued at more than $300,000. However, the primary construction labor for the project, as well as significant donations of materials, will be provided through volunteers from Five Cities Girls Softball, one of the primary users of the fields. In addition, monetary donations to the project were made by Loomis Lions International and the American Legion. The town of Loomis has approved $20,000 towards deferring costs of the project and Williams + Paddon, Architects + Planners have provided pro bono services for design and construction documents for the projects.

The budget revision is for $182,500 and will be moved from the Franklin School Community Park project to the Loomis Park North Restroom Improvements project.
