Tahoe Basin Community Plan Updates Getting Public Input

As part of continuing public outreach efforts, Placer County will hold its second Community Workshop for the Tahoe Basin Community Plan Update in mid-June. An initial workshop session was held in May. The next workshop will continue to enable the Plan Area Teams to help the county develop the zoning and development standards and design guidelines within the North Tahoe Basin.

There are four county working groups representing four Plan Areas which will encompass the Tahoe Basin Community Plan boundary within Placer County’s portion of the Tahoe Basin. The Plan Areas are:

  • West Shore Plan Area, which includes Homewood, Sunnyside and Tahoma;
  • Greater Tahoe City Plan Area, which includes Tahoe City, Lake Forest, Dollar Hill and the Tahoe City Gateway;
  • North Tahoe West Plan Area, which includes Carnelian Bay and Tahoe Vista; and
  • North Tahoe East Plan Area, which includes Kings Beach and Stateline.

Attending the May workshop were the Plan Area Team Members, staff from the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, Community Design consultants, representatives from the Tahoe Basin Partnership for Sustainability Communities, Supervisor Montgomery and county staff.

At the workshop, each Plan Area Team identified a community vision statement and community/design themes for their Plan Area. The vision statements will be used to help draft the development standards and design guidelines for each Plan Area or community within the North Tahoe Basin and will also help guide land use development in each Plan Area over the next 20 years.

““The willingness of sometimes opposed groups to work together to create a strong, sustainable vision for their communities was heartening,” said Placer County Board of Supervisors Chairwoman, Jennifer Montgomery, whose Fifth District includes Placer County’s portion of Tahoe. “The Community Plan update is the best opportunity for local residents and business owners to work with the county to develop a long-term plan for their neighborhoods that is crafted and supported by the individual communities. I’m very pleased with the commitment these volunteers have shown.”

California State Law requires cities and counties to prepare and adopt a comprehensive, long-term general plan every 20 years. These plans are then used to determine a community’s fundamental values related to how a community should develop, by setting land use policies which help to guide a community’s physical development. General/Community Plans include seven elements: land use; housing; circulation; conservation; open space; noise; and safety. Additionally, in the Lake Tahoe Basin, Community Plans must be consistent with the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency’s Regional Plan Update.

The next Community Workshop is scheduled for June 13, 2012 from 6:00 PM until 9:00 PM at the North Tahoe North Tahoe Event Center, 8318 North Lake Blvd., in Kings Beach.

The county will also be holding a Town Hall Meeting in late June to provide the community with information and a status report on the Community Plan Update. The date and location of the Town Hall Meeting will be announced.
