Placer County to Celebrate Opening of Little Free Library in Dutch Flat
June 19, 2013
The public is invited to attend a ceremony Wednesday, June 26 celebrating Placer County’s first Little Free Library – an unusual book-lending kiosk located at the Golden Drift Museum in Dutch Flat.
The ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. outside the museum, 32820 Main St. The event is sponsored by the Placer County Library and Literacy Support Council of Placer County.
“I hope residents will join us for the June 26 ceremony,” said Supervisor Jennifer Montgomery, Dutch Flat’s representative on the Placer County Board of Supervisors. “Dutch Flat’s Little Free Library is diminutive in size, but part of a huge grassroots movement that seeks to promote literacy, encourage people to read more often and strengthen community bonds by having neighbors share their favorite books with each other. As an avid reader who lives in Serene Lakes, I see great potential for Little Free Libraries in rural communities such as mine.”
A nonprofit group, Little Free Library Ltd., started the movement in 2009. Stewards typically oversee the operation of Little Free Libraries, but the public is encouraged to informally borrow and donate books.
