Health Advisory Issued For Griff Creek In Kings Beach

July 23, 2014

Placer County Environmental Health is issuing a Health Advisory to avoid water contact with Griff Creek due to elevated levels of bacteria.

Griff Creek is a small creek in the location of Lake Tahoe near Highway 267 at Highway 28 in Kings Beach, California. The Griff Creek Advisory includes the creek near the Highway road culvert and bridge where the creek widens and ponds.

The advisory is only for Griff Creek and is based on sampling conducted by the State of California Lahontan Regional Water Quality Control Board.

“There is currently no health concern involving the waters of Lake Tahoe or any of the surrounding beaches at Lake Tahoe,” said Wesley Nicks, Director of Environmental Health for Placer County

Samples indicate bacteria levels exceed the California Department of Public Health Guidelines for fresh water recreational areas.

The cause of the elevated bacteria is undetermined but is most likely naturally occurring from area wildlife and may be associated with drought conditions that have resulted in reduced water flow rates that are warmer than normal within the creek drainage.
