Youth Commission Seeking Engaged Teens Who Want to Make A Difference
Published on May 18, 2015
Making a difference and providing a voice for youth have been the hallmark for the Placer County Youth Commission. Each year, 18 youths volunteer their time to serve on the commission and deal with issues facing their peers. The commission advises the county Board of Supervisors on these issues, playing a key role in involving youth in local government.
The commission is seeking interested applicants who are willing to serve for the next term, which begins in September and runs through the school year until the following June. Applications for the next term are due May 25.
Founded in 2009, the commission consists of 15 primary members and three alternate members from diverse backgrounds and schools. Commission members have a drive to make their community the best possible place for youth to live. Members are supported by an adult advisor from Placer County Health and Human Services. There is at least one member appointed from the each five supervisorial districts.
The evening meetings are held in Auburn, in the board chambers, and in Rocklin at Rocklin Library Community Room. Commission members are appointed and confirmed by the supervisors and must be between the ages of 14 and 21. Members may serve a maximum of four full terms
Those interested in representing Placer County youth are encouraged to first read additional information about the commission and then submit an online application, both of which can be accessed at: Youth Commission .
An adult advisor from Placer County’s Children’s System of Care, Kara Sutter, works with the commission and can answer any questions. She can be reached by emailing Kara Sutter, or by telephone at 530-886-2811.
