The Placer County Board of Supervisors approved a proclamation Tuesday declaring May 2014 to be Lupus Awareness Month in Placer County.
The proclamation also expresses the county’s support for research on the disease funded by the National Institutes of Health.
Lupus is a disease caused by a disorder of the immune system. There currently is no cure, but the disease can be treated effectively with drugs.
“The number of people with Lupus in the United States has been estimated to be as many as 1.5 million,” explained Wesley Nicks, County Division Director of Public and Environmental Health and Animal Services. “Intense research is under way and scientists funded by the National Institutes of Health are continuing to make great strides in understanding the disease, which may ultimately lead to a cure.”
