It's a quick 40-minute drive east on Interstate 80 (I-80) from the Sacramento International Airport to Auburn, nestled in the Sierra Nevada foothills. Or you can fly into the Reno - Tahoe International Airport, with hundreds of daily commercial flights, just a 55 minute drive west on I-80 and Hwy 267 to Tahoe's North Shore.
In addition, private planes, helicopters and small jets can use three smaller airports in Placer County:
Interstate 80, one of the nation's major east/west freeways, runs from the San Francisco Bay Area to the East Coast. It runs the full length Placer County, from Roseville, just east of Sacramento, crosses the Sierra Nevada mountains, and reaches Lake Tahoe at the eastern end of the county. Then I-80 swinging northeast to Reno, Nevada.
Interstate 5, another major freeway, runs north/south, the Mexican border to Canada. It crosses I-80 north of Sacramento, for a quick 30-minute drive to Placer County.
