Free tax prep for eligible individuals and families

Published on Feb. 24, 2021

For the fifth year, Placer County Health and Human Services will provide free tax assistance to eligible individuals and families, in cooperation with the IRS and United Way, through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program.

VITA helps wage earners with the highest need receive their earned income tax credit, a refundable federal and state income tax credit for low-to moderate-income working individuals and families.

This year more residents are eligible for the earned income tax credit through Assembly Bill 1876.

The VITA program’s trained volunteers help guide residents through the filing process, making sure that they don’t miss out on applicable credits.

Last year, VITA filings netted Placer County residents close to $447,000 in returns.

“In year’s past, we’ve seen this program really grow and help our residents keep their hard earned dollars in their pockets,” said Human Services Director Amanda Sharp. “This year more than ever, those hard earned dollars are needed to help mitigate the impact of COVID-19 and boost our local economy.”

The free tax preparation assistance, conducted entirely online, will be available to qualifying individuals and families who earned approximately $65,000 or less in 2020. Learn more by visiting the United Way website
