Organic wastes produce methane, a potent greenhouse gas, when they decompose in a landfill. In Placer County, no matter how green waste is collected or even if it is self-hauled, it ends up at one of two Materials Recovery Facilities (MRFs) where it is separated from garbage, then chipped for use as mulch or compost. This preserves room in the landfill and reduces methane production.
Additionally, mulch and compost have beneficial qualities such as adding nutrients to soil and increasing soil’s water-holding capacity.
