Students from Colfax, Confluence and Foresthill high schools got a behind-the-scenes look into local government today during Placer County’s second annual Youth in Government Day.

Youth in Government Day highlights the importance of public service and provides an opportunity to learn about the many career paths and employment opportunities available in Placer County.

Students toured a variety of county departments at the Placer County Government Center in North Auburn. Participating departments included Placer County Sheriff’s Office, Agriculture, Community Development Resource Agency, Health and Human Services, Information Technology and Parks and Open Space.

Throughout the day students were involved in an interactive learning process, observing county government in action and touring county facilities.

Students were also addressed by Placer County Board of Supervisors Chair and District 5 Supervisor Cindy Gustafson and Placer County Executive Officer Todd Leopold.

“Our youth are the future leaders of our state and nation,” said Gustafson. “I am truly impressed to see some of our students from the Placer Union High School District taking interest in civic service.”

“Youth in Government Day is a unique opportunity for emerging students to explore their skills and interests as they ponder their continuing education after high school and future career opportunities by learning how local government operates and the meaningful aspects of public service can be,” said Leopold.

In addition to the staff-led tours, students were provided with a pizza lunch and interacted with county staff at a variety of department activity booths to learn more about the county services.
