High-Friction Surface Treatment to be Applied to 26 County Roads

Placer County is kicking off an important safety improvement project involving the preparation and application of a skid-resistant surface at key areas throughout the county.

Each year, Placer County conducts a traffic safety analysis that identifies where most crashes occur. This analysis identified 26 locations that are prone to run-off-the-road type accidents. In an ongoing effort to improve road conditions for residents and motorists, Placer County’s Department of Public Works has contracted with Interstate Road Management to place a High Friction Surface Treatment (HFST) at these areas.

The project is scheduled to began the week of October 27 and is anticipated to last approximately one month, with all activities being complete the week of November 24, 2014. During the resurfacing phase, work will take place Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., as well as on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. No work is anticipated to be done on Sundays. Crews will close one lane at a time and one-way traffic control will be in effect until the surface treatment work is cone. Motorists may experience lane closures, traffic delays and detours. Access to local property owners will be coordinated on an individual basis.

Placer County’s goal is to minimize public impacts as much as possible during the resurfacing. For the safety of workers and other motorists, please observe all traffic control signs and instructions of onsite workers. Every effort will be made to accommodate motorists in a timely manner.

HFST Background:

HFST has proven to be effective in reducing accidents by dramatically increasing the friction between vehicle tires and the roadway. This helps vehicles stop faster and drivers maintain better control without skidding. HFST is especially effective in helping drivers maintain control around curves, going down hills, or approaching an intersection. The treatment places a thin layer of specially engineered aggregates as a topping on a coat of resin binder. The resin binder then locks the aggregate firmly in place, creating an extremely rough and durable surface capable of withstanding everyday roadway demands.
