Storms emergency proclamation
Placer County proclaimed a local emergency today due to the ongoing threat of powerful winter storms. Heavy wind and rain have flooded county roads and toppled trees. Of particular concern is the potential for debris flows in the Mosquito Fire and River Fire burn scars, which could threaten lives and critical infrastructure in those areas.

Seven elected officials take oath of office
Seven elected officials took the oath of office at today’s first meeting of the new year for the Placer County Board of Supervisors. Among those to take the oath was newly elected District 2 Supervisor Shanti Landon, who was selected by voters in November to fill the seat left vacant by Robert Weygandt who retired at the end of 2022 after 28 years of service.

County to open low-barrier shelter for unhoused
Placer County is establishing a mobile temporary shelter for people experiencing homelessness in the Auburn area. Soon to be located at 11517 F Avenue in the Placer County Government Center, the low-barrier shelter will consist of approximately 50 tents with cots and basic bedding.

Public Health reports first pediatric flu death of this season
Placer County Public Health has been notified that a Placer County child under the age of 5 recently died from complications of influenza, the first such pediatric death in the county this season. The child had underlying health conditions, which did not include COVID-19 or RSV.
