Fines & Fees

Placer County Library charges overdue fines for items returned late, damage costs for items returned in poor condition, and replacement charges for items that are lost. These fines and fees are determined by the Placer County Board of Supervisors and the Library Advisory Board.

We appreciate you returning your items by their due dates in the condition you received them so that everyone can enjoy the library.

Accounts with $10.00 or more in charges cannot check physical items out from the Library.

Types of Fees

Overdue Fines: $0.25 per item, per day, to a maximum of $2.50 except for Magazines (which have a maximum of $2.00)

Materials are considered late one day after they are due to the Library.

Replacement Charge for Lost Library Material: Price of item.

We understand life can get hectic and things happen. When an item is two weeks overdue, we bill you for the replacement so that we can continue to offer a robust, high-quality collection for all of our community members. Review our loan periods here.

We ask that you let us know as soon as you lose an item before it becomes overdue so you don’t also have to pay those fines; we can give you an extra renewal if you want time to look for an item you think is lost – just let us know! When an item is lost on your account, the Library will email you an invoice for the cost of replacing the item. Your library card will be blocked, preventing you from renewing or checking out further items until the lost item is paid. Replacements for lost items will not be accepted.

Charge for Damaged Materials: Based on Damage.

If you return an item that can no longer be used, or is returned in worse condition than it was originally borrowed, the Library will require you to pay to repair or replace the item so that it can be used by other customers. The Library will post costs for partial damage to your account, and will mail invoices for full replacement costs. Your library card will be blocked, preventing you from renewing or checking out items until the damage is paid. Replacements for damaged items will not be accepted.
