Placer County Offers Free Tax Prep Assistance
Published on March 09, 2016
Tax season isn't always the most enjoyable time. However, this year Placer County is offering something to make that tax day deadline a little easier.
Until April 8, Placer County will offer free tax preparation assistance to those with an annual household income of less than $54,000. Those who are single and make less than $14,820 also qualify.
The services are available Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Placer County Human Services Employment Services Office, located at 1000 Sunset Boulevard Suite 100, in Rocklin. Services are also available Wednesdays (except March 16) at Placer County WIC Human Services office at 11542 B Avenue, in North Auburn.
Placer County's program manager Mary Barker says it's all about helping everyone who is entitled to claim the earned income tax credit actually get it.
"The Earned Income Tax Credit was enacted in 1975 to offset Social Security and provide incentive to work," Barker said. "By offering free tax service to customers with earned income below $54,000 we are assisting customers that might not generally have their taxes prepared and would not receive the earned income tax credit."
There are a few requirements for those who qualify for the intended service.
"For married filed jointly, both spouses must be present, all forms (W-2 and 1099), information for any household income, identification, original social security card, last year's tax return (if available), direct deposit account information for refund, paid daycare provider, forms 1095-A, B or C (if available)," Barker said. "All proof of income is required, state and federal. We will file both returns at the same time."
Even though Placer County is offering the service, customers don't need to be a Placer County resident to receive the free tax preparation.
During their appointment customers can expect to complete an interview, have their taxes prepared, and reviewed. Tax preparation is completed and submitted online unless the customer requests to file taxes on their own. Appointments typically last one hour.
Not only will people get help with tax filing, they also might find that they have a tax return coming their way.
"Some customers are seeing federal returns up to $4,000 and state returns between $200-1,000," Barker said.
Those interested can make an appointment by calling 916-498-1000 or by going online to the Your United Way website . Walk-in appointments also welcome.
