1. Am I limited to an 8 hour course?

No, the class may exceed the minimum hours but cannot exceed 16 hours.

2. Can a non-certified instructor team with a certified firearms instructor?

Yes, a non-certified instructor may teach the curriculum as long as the minimum curriculum is covered and the certified instructor must teach the range portion of the class. For more information, contact the Concealed Carry Licensing Office.

3. If my employer has insurance do I need an individual policy?

No, as long as you are covered while instructing for that employer. You must provide proof of coverage.

4. Am I required to have a business license for every county I teach for?

No, you are required to have a business license in the City or County where you provide instruction. If for example, you teach your class in Roseville but shoot in Lincoln, we require you to have a Roseville business license. For more information, contact the Concealed Carry Weapons office.

5. Am I limited to the listed curriculum?

No, you may include additional topics.

6. My range does not license drawing from a holster. What now?

You may meet this requirement by covering the specifics of drawing a weapon from concealment on their person in a classroom environment. We encourage this topic to be covered in the classroom as drawing loaded weapons greatly increases the danger to your students. For more information, contact the Concealed Carry Weapons office.

7. What documentation is required prior the applicant’s appointment?

At minimum Concealed Carry Weapons (CCW) applicants must provide their valid California driver’s license, proof of residency in the county such as a current utility bill, tax bill, voter registration, rental agreement etc. Vehicle registration is not enough. These documents should be uploaded during the CCW application process or provided to the investigator during the interview. Additional documentation, such as the firearm training certificate, can be added later by uploading it through the Order Tracker.

8. I teach students from many counties, how do I cover each counties specific instructions?

Instructors should be familiar with the requirements for the counties they instruct. It is most important that you direct your students to read carefully the instructions specific to the county they are applying. Most delays occur because applicants have come ill prepared for the interview.

9. Every county differs, am I expected to coach students on what to include in their statements?

No, you are not expected to inform your students on good cause. Every situation differs, however, Placer County generally requires applicants to explain why they are seeking a Concealed Carry Weapons license.  

10. What are the conditions for Placer County Sheriff's Office?

Concealed Carry Weapon (CCW) licenses issued in Placer County have the following restrictions:

• Licensee shall not, when carrying a weapon
• Consume any alcoholic beverage. (DOJ)
• Commit any criminal act. Must report any arrest to the Sheriff within 10 days.
• Be in a place having a primary purpose of dispensing alcoholic beverages for on-site consumption (DOJ)
• Be under the influence of any drug, or alcoho. (DOJ)
• Use any illegal drug
• Refuse to show license or surrender weapon to law enforcement upon request (DOJ)
• Impede any peace officer (DOJ)
• Represent self as a peace officer to any person, if not so employed (DOJ)
• Possess weapon any place where prohibited by law or sign (DOJ)
• Unjustifiably display weapon (DOJ)
• Carry a concealed weapon not listed on the license (DOJ)
• Fail to disclose, when stopped or detained by law enforcement, your status as a CCW license holder when you are carrying a weapon on your person or in your vehicle

11. Can you explain each condition?

Most are standard for all Concealed Carry Weapons:

1. Consume any alcoholic beverage. (DOJ)
2. Alcohol consumption causes the most problems. You cannot drink while carrying.
3. Commit any criminal act. Must report any arrest to the Sheriff within 10 days. If arrested you must notify the Sheriff regardless of conviction.
4. Be in a place having a primary purpose of dispensing alcoholic beverages for on-site consumption. (DOJ) A place with “primary purpose of selling alcohol” is a bar. If you have to be 21 to go inside, it is a bar.
5. Be under the influence of any drug, or alcohol. (DOJ) Alcohol, drugs, and medications can all result in being under the influence.
6. Use any illegal drug. All illegal drug use is prohibited.
7. Refuse to show license or surrender weapon to law enforcement upon request. (DOJ)
   If asked by law enforcement to show your license or surrender your weapon, you must comply. This most likely will be temporary, during a contact only. Most often the license and weapon are returned at the conclusion of the contact. The license is the property of the issuing agency. If there is an issue, the officer may take the license until a review is conducted. This will come after an administrative hearing.
8. Impede any peace officer. (DOJ)
   Impeding any peace officer may simply be refusal to cooperate to their lawful request.
9. Represent self as a peace officer to any person, if not so employed. (DOJ)
   Claiming to be a peace officer while not one.
10. Possess weapon any place where prohibited by law or sign. (DOJ)
    If a location or business prohibits weapons, you cannot carry even with a CCW license. They may have a sign or may simply ask you to remove the weapon from their business, you must comply.
    Schools, you can drive in and pick up your kids, but if go onto the campus for an event such as a play of sporting events, most prohibit weapons.
11. Unjustifiably display weapon. (DOJ)
    Display weapon when not justified, either in a hostile manner or simply display it. A concealed weapon is intended to be concealed until it is needed for self-defense.
12. Carry a concealed weapon not listed on the license. (DOJ)
    Only weapons on the license may be carried.
13. Fail to disclose, when stopped or detained by law enforcement, your status as a CCW license holder when you are carrying a weapon on your person or in your vehicle.
    All Placer license holders are required to inform law enforcement during a contact that they are a license holder and if they are carrying. It is much safer to have this information shared rather than have it come to light as a surprise to the officer.

12. Can I use more than one range?

Yes, each location must be on file with Placer County Sheriff's Office and each must meet the listed requirements.

13. May I change my qualification shoot later?

Yes, just send the changes to Placer County Sheriff's Office for review.

14. Must the students fire each weapon they plan to carry?

Yes.

15. Why must I inspect every firearm?

Many certificates come through with errors on the weapon’s serial numbers. You are the only point in the process where the actual firearm is inspected. We depend on the instructors to accurately record the serial numbers on their certificates.

16. Why must I recertify every two years?

Placer County Sheriff's Office will inspect your documents every two years to assure that you have maintained current insurance and licensing over that time period. Many instructors change cities and or ranges, this allows us to keep our list current. Contact the Sheriff for more information.

17. Can I list more than three weapons on my Concealed Carry Weapons license?

No.

18. Can a married couple share weapons?

Yes. Any weapon listed on a Concealed Carry Weapons license must be registered with the California Department of Justice, Firearms Bureau to the CCW licensee or to the licensee’s legal spouse or registered domestic partner.

19. Can I carry a 22?

No. Placer County Sheriff's Office will only allow weapons from a 25 caliber up to a 45 caliber.

20. Can I add laser sights?

Yes, we allow modification to enhance the sighting. This includes modifications to grips. We do not allow modifications to the weapons that would alter it from the manufacturer’s original setting.

21. How long is the renewal course?

4 hours minimum.

22. What do I have to cover, I cannot cover all of the curriculum in such a short time?

We ask that you use the same curriculum as in the standard course, but simply review those areas deemed most important. It is important that every student receive an updated curriculum packet every two years.

23. Must the student qualify with their weapon(s)?

Yes. They must qualify with every weapon listed on their license.
