The Placer County District Attorney’s Office is joining Justine Vanderschoot’s family in their plea to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation to deny her murderers’ request to be released from prison.
Brandon Fernandez was DENIED parole on July 28 and Daniel Bezemer was denied his parole hearing with the CDCR parole board on August 10.
In Oct. 2022, the Executive Board of the Board of Parole Hearings, a division of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, voted to vacate Daniel Bezemer’s Aug. 10.
Daniel Bezemer and his friend Brandon Fernandez admitted to the strangulation and murder of Justine Vanderschoot in 2003. In 2005, Bezemer received a sentence of 25 years to life and Fernandez received a sentence of 15 years to life.
In 2023, California Governor Newson signed Assembly Bill 1071, authored by Assemblyman Joshua Hoover, into law.
Sponsored by the Placer County District Attorney’s Office, Assembly Bill 1071 will develop a statewide teen dating violence prevention resource portal to support participating local school districts. The bill was inspired by the Vanderschoot family + Justine's story. Learn more about the bill.
Did you know that 1 in 12 high school students experienced sexual dating violence?
Justine's family will tell you there were signs, but they thought it was just a young teenage boy acting bigger than he truly felt. It seemed harmless until after the fact.
The message? Talk to your loved ones early and often. Check in with them. Empower them to see the signs and take action. Learn more
