Supervisors to Address Voter-Approved Public Safety Raises

At its regularly scheduled meeting on Tue., Feb. 14, 2012, the Placer County Board of Supervisors will consider salary adjustments for Placer County law enforcement personnel. The annual adjustments, approved by voters in 1977, tie selected County job classifications to an average of similar position in three adjacent counties: Sacramento, Nevada and El Dorado.

The included classifications and current adjustments include:

  • Captain, .58 percent;
  • Lieutenant, .59 percent;
  • Sergeant, 3.15 percent;
  • Chief Deputy Coroner, 3.16 percent;
  • Deputy Sheriff II, 3.16 percent;
  • Deputy Sheriff I, 3.16;
  • Investigator, 3.15 percent;
  • Supervising Investigator Welfare Fraud, 3.15 percent; and
  • Investigator Welfare Fraud, 3.15 percent.

Measure F was a local initiative that was sponsored by the Placer County Deputy Sheriff’s Association, passed by county voters and took effect in 1977. The public safety salary adjustments are mandatory. However, as part of the process, the Board of Supervisors must approve an annual ordinance authorizing the salary adjustments for the specified peace officer classifications in Placer County.

For the Deputy Sheriff II classification, the County’s most populous class, the 3.16 percent increase this year will translate into a $2,220 raise to an approximate annual base salary of $72,444. The total annualized cost effect for all increases will be $800,331, which will be expected to be absorbed by the affected departments.
