Supervisors Approve Major Step in Drive to Build New Animal Shelter

The Placer County Board of Supervisors approved a major step Tuesday, Feb. 5 in the county’s drive to build a new animal shelter in Auburn. The current 9,300-square-foot animal shelter is more than 40 years old.

Board members voted unanimously to proceed with a two-part process for selecting a firm to design and construct the new 35,000-square-foot shelter. The proposed location is a 4.5-acre site at the west end of the Placer County Government Center, a county campus in North Auburn commonly known as the DeWitt Center.

In the first phase of the process, the county will issue a request for qualifications (RFQ), a step that will allow the county to determine the three most-qualified design-build firms. The request for qualifications is scheduled to be released in April.

In the second phase, the county will use a request for proposals (RFP) process to select one of the three firms to design and build the shelter.

The two-phase process likely will take about six months to complete. Construction of the shelter is tentatively scheduled to be completed in 2016.

The total project cost is estimated to be $23.6 million, including $18 million for the design-build contract and $5.6 million for other costs, including a needs assessment, architectural program, development of design and performance criteria and the RFQ/RFP package, environmental documentation, construction and project management services, inspection and testing, and contingencies.
